Tokai Precision Bass PB-40 It is fair condition 1981+ made Tokai precision Bass Replica The logo mark is the early time one. When I checked the bass, I found many dents.
Well, this is fair condition bass. The metal parts are rusted as aged. I didn't polish them to keep the vintage taste. The neck is fine, 1P Maple with rose finger board. The truss rod is workable. The nut width is 41.5 mm.
The frets are proper condition too. The body material should be Sen (Japanese Ash) 3p, it is standard weight (3.94Kg) with other Tokai Hard Puncher bass. The sound, it is PB tone, it has good heavy bottom tone. The electric circuit is original too.
I just put electric lubrications into the pots. We are going to ship this bass with used Gigbag. Please try JV Precision Bass!

Tokai serial numbers are particularly difficult to decipher.
With these Fender clones, a six digit serial simply indicates that the clone is based on a model Fender manufactured between '65 and '76. (The Fender experts might be able to assist in identifying the original Fender model.) As has been mentioned, this is not an '81, as the headstock log (barred 'T' in script style) wasn't introduced until into '84. It would be good if you had the original Tokai 'model' sticker on the heel of the neck, just above the neck pocket, but, to my eye, this looks like a (T)PB40 or 48. There's a lot of detective work required to pin down a ballpark year of manufacture, particularly with the models which were in production over an extended period.

Please do it TODAY!, Host & Founder LOST YOUR?. / / guymanndude1 USA/ Tennessee Boatload of weird. Feb 11th, 2007 09:16 AM I've heard that quite a few guitarist out there really like the old Tokai's. Someone told me that as far as the features of the guitars and basses go they are nearly an identical copy to the Pre-CBS era instruments. Nitro finishes, Brazilian Rosewood slab boards, hardware and pickups that are nearly identical to the originals. Anyone have any knowledge of these instruments?
Are they a good buy? Mib The Coast Feb 11th, 2007 10:10 AM I was impressed with the few I've played. Bass geezer Contributing Member Bleed All Over 'Em.Let 'Em Know You're There! Feb 11th, 2007 10:30 AM I bought a new Hard Puncher in the early 80s and wish I still had it. There were three variants of the P bass offered: a generic model and 57/62 repros, which were a slight upcharge.
I bought the basic model, eventually changing out the stock pickup and installing a P/J set-up. It was a nice bass but not an 'identical copy' of a pre-CBS Fender. For one thing, the necks on any Tokai Ps I've seen are all B width, including the 57 and 62 models. Don't think they were nitro finishes either. Are they a good buy?. Not sure what Tokais go for today, so I can't say how good a buy they are, but they're good basses. I wouldn't pass one up if the price was right.
One Drop Contributing Member. Swiss Alps Sound and Pressure Feb 12th, 2007 12:35 PM I'll tell you in a day or two, I boughg one from a seller in the US last week and it's on its way. I've never owned a split-coil P and this one will be strung with Rotos for a punky puncher of a P. I think they are actually closer to '70s Ps in design, after playing one a few weeks ago. The one I tried was super punchy and fat, very nice beefy neck and pretty light. I don't think the finish is nitro, either, but the board was very dark and waxy, maybe it was Brazilian rosewood.
Tokai Hard Puncher Bass Price
Mine is mint, Oly White, and cost me $550, which is the higher end of what they go for these days, I think. I'll post a review when I get it. Eb2jim usa boom Feb 12th, 2007 03:02 PM They were cheaper than the Fender RI basses, but not by that much. I recall they came out round the same time as them, and the headstock shape changed fairly early. They made fun Gibson copies too. They had tweed covered cases and champ sized amps but the tweed was yellow and cheesey looking.
They made nice copies that were more accurate than previous things like Ibanez, but not as close at what Fender got in the shops. Then the Squire and Fender Japan stuff was competing with them and that was really nice and cheap. It was a fun time. You could get Fender RI, Squier, Tokai, and for a few hundred more the real thing. One Drop Contributing Member.
Swiss Alps Sound and Pressure Feb 15th, 2007 12:25 PM Well, I got my Hard Puncer in the post today. I only had an hour to play it, so I'll give a mini review based on my first impressions. The neck is a B width, I think, and fairly meaty without being too big.
Reminds me most of a typical '70s P neck. The rosewood board is very dark, very good looking. The finish is a well yellowed Oly White, and it has sunk into the grain. It could very well be nitro by the looks of it.
It came with a red tort and a black P/G, don't know which was original. It has the original Fender shaped headstock. It's around 8 1/2lbs, perfectly balanced and very comfy. It's one of the most resonant Ps I've played, and it sings all the way up the neck. It's tone is very full and throaty, with a lot of sustain and quite a sharp attack. Very growly for a P.
I'm amazed at the depth and clarity of each note- definitely one of the better Precisions I've played. I wouldn't be able to tell it from a Fender by listening to it or playing it- they really nailed the sound and feel. It's wearing D'Addario Chrome flats, which I don't really like on a Jazz, but they suit this bass perfectly. I'm still going to slap a set of Rotosound RS66 rounds on this puppy- I can't wait to hear how it snarls. I would seriously recommend one of these to whomever has a chance to try or buy one; a lot of bass for the money, and these will definitely increase in collector value if that means anything to you.
Pictures to follow as soon as I bring her home from the rehearsal space. Bass geezer Contributing Member Bleed All Over 'Em.Let 'Em Know You're There! Feb 15th, 2007 02:12 PM Hey One Drop, everything you've said is reminding me why I'm so sorry I sold mine. Thanks a lot.;^) And come to think of it, if yours is one of the 57/62 reissue models it might just be nitro, but I can't remember for sure. The pickguard that came on my Oly white one was black, btw.

Swiss Alps Sound and Pressure Feb 17th, 2007 02:17 PM Bass Geezer, you might want to look away now. But if you don't, maybe you can tell me by looking at the photos in my profile if this is a standard or one of the reissue models, and if so, which one (though I'm guessing the RIs had different decals).
I downloaded these pix from the ones the seller sent me; I haven't taken any of my own yet. I don't know how to tell Brazilian RW from the various strains of Indian and other ones. Can anyone hazard a guess as to the type on this bass, from the F/B picture in my profile? It's a lot darker in natural light, but the sun really highlights the grain in this photo, taken with the original P/G still on it. I'm really loving this bass, and am getting used to the neck. The profile is very rounded, which I like better than the flatter ones on a wide neck like this.
Guymanndude1, if you're out there, my answer to your original question is: Yes (This message was last edited by One Drop at 02:28 PM, Feb 17th, 2007) bass geezer Contributing Member Bleed All Over 'Em.Let 'Em Know You're There! Feb 17th, 2007 09:15 PM I think you're right about the different decal for the RIs, One Drop. I think the '57 had a 'TRP-57' (or something like that) decal. Can't remember about the '62. So I'm guessing yours is the 'standard' model; it certainly looks like my old one.
You still think it's a nitro finish? Looks pretty glossy to me in the pics and I'm pretty sure my old one wasn't nitro. J-Boy Contributing Member. Australia Where is it, where is the Thump-Thump? Feb 18th, 2007 01:34 AM Whacky Smacky - That sure is a stunner. I have looked at these over the past 6 months but this one is definatley the best I have seen.
I have asked 2 sellers in Japan to find me one and both say it's coming - but not yet. If they play as good as they look then they really could be a Fender killer in maybe a little less crapshoot. 8^) One Drop Contributing Member. Swiss Alps Sound and Pressure Feb 18th, 2007 03:52 AM I thought it might be nitro because of the way it sunk into the grain, but I'm not sure at all. It's not an issue at all for me, anyway, I was just curious. They definitely play well, based on this one and the other one I tried a few weeks ago, which was what turned me on to these in the first place.
From what I've heard the factory they were made in at the time was doing great work, so maybe there is less of a crapshoot in buying one. J-Boy Contributing Member. Tokais have a number placed at the bottom of the neck near the plate. They indicate the model you could call it. The higher the number, the more expensive the bass as in build and hardware.
The highest number I recall seeing is 60, maybe others know a bit more than me. One Drop Contributing Member.
Swiss Alps Sound and Pressure Feb 18th, 2007 11:23 AM Is that a feature of modern Tokais, J-boy? Mine has no number I can see. Those are wild looking basses in your link.

Feb 18th, 2007 02:43 PM Hmmm.not too sure One Drop. Im inclined to think now the numbers come from the vintage territory. This picture seems to fit. I have also seen '40' on a lot of instruments. J-Boy Contributing Member. Australia Where is it, where is the Thump-Thump?

Uncle stack-knob Contributing Member united kingdom nil illigitium carborundum Feb 18th, 2007 05:07 PM In the mid eighties some of the Tokai's were so close to original Fender that the lawsuit tag arose. I recall the J-basses,many in vintage colours with matching stocks, and some with very playable rounded in necks and great looking 'bursts and tort guards.Other than the very very early ones the tuners were different in having the two piece key shaft in effect. Some Jazz basses started to sport a P-Bass style pickup in the neck position by around 1986 I think it was. I'm not used to bigger P style necks, and the lack of a big shoulder on this one makes it easier for me to adjust to. The PUPs do sound great, tons of detail in the high mids, which I really like. Contents. History Tokai began in 1947, as a and piano manufacturer. It developed its first, the Pianica, in 1961. Tokai began making and in 1973 and the electric piano in 1975.
Guitars Tokai started making in 1965. It made its first in 1968 with the Humming Bird, a guitar loosely based on the Mark I and II. This was followed in 1970 with the Humming Bird Custom (not to be confused with the guitar model produced by ). From 1970 to 1973, Tokai produced Conn acoustic guitars under contract with ( and ). In 1972, Tokai entered into a with to supply parts and also to build Martin's electric guitar line. In 1974, Tokai launched its own Cat's Eyes line of acoustic guitars which were replicas of C.F. Martin guitars.
Between 1977 and 1978, Tokai began making various and replica electric guitars and basses. These models are generically known as 'lawsuit guitars'. Tokai's replica of the electric guitar, named the 'Les Paul Reborn' model, started in 1978. By 1980, the name was changed to 'Reborn Old' and later to its current name, 'Love Rock'. Knut miller atlas of anatomy. The name change was in response to threats from American guitar companies to go to court to protect their. Tokai also made replicas, the “Springy Sound” (ST series, replica) and the “Breezy Sound” (TE series, replica). Played a 'Tokai Springy Sound' at one time.
This guitar was fitted with lipstick pickups and can be seen on the cover of his second studio album (this was actually a guitar built by Charley Wirz in Dallas, not a Tokai). By the late 1970s, replicas of Fender guitars, such as the '.38 Special' guitar and the 'Hard Puncher' bass (replica of the ), began to be sold in Japan and Europe. Tokai Talbo In 1983, Tokai introduced an aluminum-body guitar called the Talbo (Tokai Aluminum Body) which the band played at one time. Tokai has its own instrument making factory and have built guitars for well-known brands under contract (OEM). Tokai and Dyna Gakki produced the solid-body models from 1997 until the end of the joint-venture in 2015. Characteristics The original selling price in is often included in the model number—for example TLS-100 = 100,000 Japanese yen. The higher priced Tokai Gibson replicas have nitrocellulose finishes and long neck joints.
Tokai guitars have been made in Japan, Korea and China. Korean production started around the mid-1990s. Tokai guitars made in Korea (MIK) are lower priced guitars, similar to the Korean guitars. The MIK (Made in Korea) guitars can be differentiated by the truss rod cover. Japanese guitars have a two-screw truss rod cover whereas the Korean guitars have a three-screw truss rod cover (although some early Korean guitars also have two-screw truss rod covers). The MIK guitars usually have a different bridge instead of the usual ABR-1 bridge.
Furthermore, MIK Gibson replica guitars usually have a neck made from, and the body wood is usually made from either,. Serial numbers Tokai uses a seven-digit serial number usually pressed into the back of the headstock for the Gibson model replicas. Love Rocks use the first digit of the serial number for the year, 10XXXXX=1981 and starting in 1989 Love Rocks use the first two digits for the year, 89XXXXX=1989. Reborn models use only the first digit for the year, 800XXXX = 1978.
There is a major exception to this in that some 'Reborn Olds' (very rare) and 'Love Rock' models have inked serial numbers on the reverse of the headstock (often referred to as 'Inkies'). These guitars are, it is generally agreed, from 1980 (00xxxxx and 01xxxxx) and 1981 (11xxxxx) although there are those who would disagree with this. It also appears that some of the original 1978 'Les Paul Reborns' have inked serial numbers. Some MIK Love Rock models have no serial number and simply have 'Made In Korea' inked on the back of the headstock.
Sometimes the model number may be located under the bridge pickup. MIK Love Rock models identified in this manner include ALS48 and ALS50Q.
The Tokai Fender replicas have a production number serial number that contains no year information. References. (October 30, 2005)—Tokai Guitar Registry. Tokai catalogues.
