I have a valid version of windows 7 on the pc I'm currently using. I recently ordered components for an entirely new computer which will arrive soon, and I intended to install windows 7 on that new computer using the license key I'm using for my current computer.
I no longer have the windows 7 installation disks, so I thought I would simply download a windows 7 ISO onto a USB stick and use that to install windows on my new computer. But as it turns out my version of windows 7 is a OEM version (could have sworn I bought it in retail, but whatever) so I cannot use my product key to download a windows 7 ISO from the recovery website. Is there any way I can get a windows 7 ISO onto my USB wihout having to look for one on some shady BitTorrent site where it has probably been tampered with? And if I do manage to get my hands on a windows 7 ISO and use that to install windows 7 on my new computer, will I be able to use my OEM product key to activate it? It's not a matter of where you purchased the Windows OS from, it's the version you purchased.
You can purchase OEM licenses from retail locations. Depending on where you're shopping, Retail licenses where also available, but at a higher price. As your original OEM license was tied to the original motherboard it is installed on, per the license agreement, you cannot use that license on another motherboard install. Microsoft had been lenient in the past about allowing you to reuse that license on a new build, but it appear that is no longer the case. They requested/demanded that Digital River remove their ISO repository; likely for this very reason. They set up their media creation tool so that it would decline OEM versions for that reason.
For 99.99% of the rest of the world, OEM licensing means we get our OS from Dell, Acer, HP, etc. If you need a recovery or reinstallation CD/DVD, contact your Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). In the days of DIY system builds, you are the OEM and if you no longer have the installation media, then you will need to purchase a new Windows 7 license.
OEM versions of Windows 7 are identical to Full License Retail versions except for the following: - OEM versions do not offer any free Microsoft direct support from Microsoft support personnel - OEM licenses are tied to the very first computer you install and activate it on - OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard - OEM versions cannot be used to directly upgrade from an older Windows operating system Microsoft.com ^ OEM vs. Retail OEM Windows 7 comes preinstalled on computers. Kmplayer skins windows 7. This is the cheapest way to buy windows.
Large PC manufacturers like Dell, HP etc. (collectively called royalty OEMs) install windows on millions of such PCs. The main characteristics of such systems are: The license agreement and support agreement is between you and the PC makes. Activation by the end user is not required. Windows is preactivated at the factory by the OEM using images and standard SLP keys. Your copy of windows is locked to that PC. The license is not transferable.
OEM system builder is what you get when you buy from say Newegg or from a local 'white box' vendor. It too has the characteristics of Royalty OEM windows.
Chicken hunter download. Although it is possible for an individual to buy a System Builder copy, the license requires that the software be installed using the OPK (OEM preinstall kit) and then resold. Retail version is what you buy from a retailer like Amazon or Bestbuy. Its a full price version that comes packaged in a retail box with a retail product key.
It has to be activated online via MS servers using the key on the box, it is not tied to the PC it was first installed on, though it can only be used on a single computer at a time. And, MS directly provides the support for it. It is also more expensive than OEM copies. As far as functionality is concerned, theres no difference between any of the versions above, given any specific edition (i.e. Between OEM pro and retail pro, or between OEM ultimate and retail ultimate).
Dear Friends, I had purchased Dell Inspiron 15R with Win8 SL (Single Language) as OS. Due to OS's user interface & my office's VPN software requirement, I had to downgrade to Windows 7. For downgrading Windows 8 SE to Windows 7 (Any edition), I had to purchase Windows 8 Pro Upgrade DVD (As told by Microsoft Support over telephone). So I purchased Windows 8 Pro Upgrade DVD. Also, Microsoft support person told to find 'Windows 7 Pro OEM Dell' DVD or ISO from friends/DellSupport & install as a clean install on my Dell laptop. But I am not able to find anywhere Windows 7 Pro x64 Dell OEM.
Dell Windows 7 Pro Oem Iso
Also, I was not able to restore Windows 8 SL, as recovery partition was corrupted (when Windows 8 was installed). Moreover, Dell support (Region - UAE, Middle East) is not supporting any OS related issues. Dell support person directed me to contact Microsoft for any OS related issues (I was really shocked after hearing that). Kindly help me to get ISO image for 'Windows 7 PRO OEM of Dell'.
Else Suggest way out of this situation. Please note, 1. When I had Windows 8 as OS, I was unable restore Windows 8 by recovery partition or rescue disks or pressing CTRL+F11 (Even I don't want to use Win8 at all). I have to use x64 edition of Windows 7 as my system RAM is 12GB and due to my work related software requirement as well.
All drivers for my laptop model are available on Dell website for both Windows 7 & 8. Currently I have installed Windows 7 PRO with generic edition (Completely wiped HDD because of Windows 8, but have taken HDD image & Win8 product key as backup) & its asking to activate Windows within 30 days. But Microsoft support could not help me to activate same, as media used was not OEM type or version for Windows 7 PRO.
I tried to search 'Windows 7 PRO OEM Dell' from all of my friends/colleagues, without success. You will first need to go to the manufacturers website for your model computer and first find out if there are Windows 7 native drivers available. A lot of computers that come preloaded with Windows 8 do not have native driver support for Windows 7 by the manufacturer. If there are no native drivers, you will have to consider returning the machine and purchasing a machine preloaded with Windows 8 Pro with downgrade rights to Windows 7 Professional. Or look through the manufacturers catalogue for systems already preloaded with Windows 7, usually the business line will have these options. Resources: Return the laptop if it came preloaded with Windows 8 and purchase one already preloaded with Windows 7, they are still available: How to downgrade: Backup before you reinstall Windows 7: Consider dual booting (credit JW Stuart MVP): Additional information: Since you want to downgrade to Windows 7 to meet the business requirement, you may refer this article and check if it helps. Consumer versions of Windows 8 Pro that come preinstalled on PCs have downgrade rights to a previous version of Windows (example: Windows 7, Windows Vista).
If your copy came pre-installed on your system, you may downgrade your copy to Windows 7. If not you need purchase a copy of Windows 7 and install the same on your computer. Downgrade rights are only available for licenses obtained through OEM or Volume Licensing (VL) and not apply to Full version (FPP). OEM downgrade rights apply to Windows 8 Pro and allows for downgrades up to two prior version.
Software Assurance through VL (Volume licensing) provides the greatest flexibility, allowing for downgrades to all prior versions and editions besides Windows 7 Ultimate and Vista Ultimate editions.Without Software Assurance coverage, VL has downgrade rights to prior versions of Windows with the exception of Enterprise. It is not possible for a Windows 8 copy with multi-language function to downgrade to Windows 7 Pro or Windows XP Pro as multi language function is exclusive to Windows 7 Enterprise edition and not available for Professional edition.
